Another competition audition...

Well, I always said if American Idol came to Salt Lake City I would audition...




Apparently, and at long last, everyone's favorite televised singing competition will be plumbing for talent right here in Utah tomorrow. Elise, Jeff, Lacie and I are pretty determined to audition, just because it's right here, and it will be a fun time to join the incredible crowds and feel the hype and energy. I do think it's rather about time, since everyone knows Mormons are quite musically talented, it seems like LDS-central would be a prime location for decent singers (not to mention the obligatory weirdos that AI just loves to exploit, at the risk of actually letting more good singers through...).

For those who don't know, this will be my second time auditioning for American Idol (in 2005 I decided Las Vegas wasn't an unreasonable distance to travel for auditions), and while it was fun before, I didn't make it past the first round. This time I am pretty much resigned to the idea that none of us will make it past the first phase (of which there are reportedly several, before you actually audition in front of the three famous judges), but they are here, so we are definitely going.

As for me, I'm kind of tired of auditioning for everything and winning nothing. Maybe this will be my turn! Whatever the case, this will be my last chance to audition for AI, since the age ceiling is 28. It's now or never!

"Celebrity" Update

Regarding this post, I have finally gone ahead and called to sign up. The girls at the Scera office were a little short with me, but perhaps they had had a long day? Anyway, they asked the usual questions, including my phone number, address, T-shirt size, and my song choice. This rather came as a surprise to me, since I thought perhaps there would be a sort of list of songs the band has in their repertoire to choose from. They said a song choice was required upon registration, so on the spot, I decided to go with the classic Bridge Over Troubled Water. I have sung it so many times that I can perform it on a moment's notice, and besides, I always think it's an audience-pleasing number. I suppose if I had to, I could adjust it, but I think that's a good one to go with.

For those who are interested, this event is a public affair, performed in the outdoor Shell theater at the Scera, and anyone and everyone is hereby invited to attend. There are six competition dates to choose from throughout the summer, and the one I picked is 16 July. There's a nominal entry fee ($4 per, I believe), but afterwards, beginning at about dusk, they will show an included outdoor movie. The movie on the night of my is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (secretly, I think that had something to do with the night I chose... or maybe not so secretly anymore I guess...).

Anyway, that's the update! Everyone come! It will be great fun and then we can join Harry and Co. in their fifth cinematic adventure!

Should I?...

So today in the advertisement mailer from the Scera (local movie and outdoor theater) I read that they're having their 3rd annual "Celebrity" competition (link here), which is basically a knock-off local version of American Idol, and for some reason, I just kept thinking... why not? I actually know Emily Noxon, the winner from last year, so I thought it might be worth it, just for fun. It's the kind of thing where I think if I don't, I'll always wonder what if. And, the promised performances for the winner/runners-up sounds actually like a fun way to spend the next several months, and you never know what happens after that! It might be cheesy, but I've been in enough of these local competitions (as well as in the eternal lines among the throngs of hopefuls in the actual AI competition) to know to take these things for what they are. The only thing I would be out is $30 for registration fee (which at this time in my life is actually a substantial amount of cash), but I think that's not too bad for the chance to perform with a live band and for a live audience. It's just a rush to me, I guess.

So, what does everyone think? Should I go for it? What do I have to lose?
